GOODBYE COMPAÑERO:

THREE OUTLAWS,

SENTENCED AND PUT AWAY

From the ibook, “The Last of the Apaches”:

“On December 18, 1917 the three Apaches were moved from the jail in Salto to the new Penitentiary in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo. They would wait a year and four months for their case to work its way through Uruguay’s cumbersome legal system. There was really no speed needed in dealing with these three - the case against them was watertight, they were extranjeros from distant lands, and they had committed some quite serious crimes. So they had no natural constituency in Uruguay nor local friends who might call for a swift proceeding. It was a public trial by jury that was finally convened in the first months of 1919.”

The Tin Can Gang had proposed to travel north after the Bank heist, first to Brazil and then on to Paraguay. After the heist went south, the gang never got its chance to go north...

I never meant to be a cheater

But there was blood on the wall

I had to steal from peter

To pay what I owed to paul

I couldn't stay and face the music

So many reasons why

I won't be sending postcards

From Paraguay

- Mark Knopfler, Postcards from Paraguay

Built in 1915 the Punta Carretas jail was a state-of-the-art lock-up for bad guys.

The three Apaches when they were transferred from Salto to Montevideo for their court case and a long prison stay in the Punta Carretas Penitenciary.

Today the Punta Carretas Jail has been turned into a unique modern Shopping Center using much of the original structure of the old prison.
